Paris has always played a central role in the history of tango. It was when tango became a fashionable craze there in 1913 that the genre finally gained acceptance back in Argentina. Before and after that moment, many tango musicians, lyricists, and dancers—coming from Argentina’s already Francophile background—lived or worked in Paris at some point. Among them was Carlos Gardel, who was consecrated there in 1928, deeply influenced by the city’s vibrant cultural life.

This talk will explore Paris during the Années folles, when the city brought together leading artists and intellectuals of the time, making it the cultural capital of the West.
