Histories of emancipation and slavery in the Caribbean

In the work of Stuart Hall and beyond.
This is a roundtable discussion where invited guest, Prof. David Scott from Columbia University, will talk with Ernesto Semán and Bjørn Enge Bertelsen, both from UiB.
The discussion will focus on David Scott’s work and his engagement with the histories of slavery and politics of emancipation in the Caribbean—also as this relates to the work of Stuart Hall. In their discussion, Stuart Hall’s reflections on these issues will be presented and discussed. We ask: What does emancipation, liberation and transformation mean in the context of the Caribbean? How are Caribbean experiences and thought important to understand broader, perhaps universal, dynamics of repression, liberation and human transformation?
