An evening dedicated to the Argentinian singer-songwriter, author and guitarist Atahualpa Yupanqui (1908-1992)

After CANTA’s last event dedicated to the Uruguayan singer-songwriter Alfredo Zitarrosa, the time has come to pay tribute to singer-songwriter, author and guitarist Atahualpa Yupanqui (1908-1992), one of the main figures in Argentinian folk music. He was born Héctor Roberto Chavero, but adopted the Quechua pseudonym Atahualpa Yupanqui as his stage name, referencing the last Inca ruler. He was a lifelong supporter of indigenous and working-class rights, and spent much of his life traveling through the rural areas of Argentina, learning and collecting  the music. In 1931, Yupanqui joined the Communist Party of Argentina, and he was later forced to seek refuge in Uruguay.

Associate professor at the University of Bergen Ernesto Semán will teach us about Atahualpa Yupanqui and his commitment to culture and social issues. He will be accompanied by musician Dimas Martinez Dubost, who will sing and play a selection of his songs.

The event will be in English and Spanish.

En esta ocasión, los invitamos a adentrarse con nosotros en la vida y la obra de Atahualpa Yupanqui, el gran maestro de la música folklórica argentina.

110/60,– (Stud./honnør)

To be able to write well, you have to read well. Authors don't read, they study books to learn.
